Khara Pongal / Spicy pongal / Ghee pongal

Ingredients:

Moong dal
¼ cup

Coconut
3-4 tbsp

Green chillies
2-3
Slit
Peppercorns
½ tbsp / 4-5

Salt
To taste

Ghee
5-6 tbsp

Coriander leaves
3-4 tbsp

Val beans / Avarekalu
4-5 tbsp

Jeera
1 tsp

Water
To cook

Turmeric
¼ tsp

Curry leaves
1 sprig




Method:

Wash and soak rice and moong dal together in a bowl for 10mins. Pressure cook Val beans with ½ tsp of salt and water for 2-3 whistles. Set aside to cool. Pressure cook the rice, moong dal, turmeric, water, peppercorns together till soft. Once the pressure comes down mash the rice - dal mixture well and set aside.





Heat a pan with 1 tbsp of ghee, add jeera, curry leaves, green chillies, and saute. Add the cooked val beans and saute a minute. Add the cooked rice-dal mixture, coconut, water to the desired consistency and mix well. Add the remaining ghee. Cook for a minute more. Switch off the stove. Garnish with coriander leaves.





Serve hot with raita, curd…..
